Travel Guide
WHEN TO GO
South Africa’s winter dry season runs from May to October and this is the ideal time to cruise the region, especially if you are visiting for the sole purpose of going on safari.
The end of the season is often the hottest and driest, this making it easier to spot wildlife when they gather at waterholes.
WHAT TO SEE
CAPE TOWN
This so called “Mother City” is home to many of the country’s best attractions, restaurants and bars and it is also South Africa’s most urbane city.
It is filled with a rich and deep history and is something entirely different to safari when on an Africa expedition cruise.
LUDERITZ
A scorched desert, German art nouveau architecture and amazing wildlife spotting opportunities are just some of the things that this wonderful destination has on offer. You need not leave dry land to spot the native animal life, but a boat trip to Penguin Island and Seal Island will offer a chance to see seals resting in their natural environment.
WALVIS BAY
Another Namibian destination, Walvis Bay is home to a wonderful flamingo colony that resides in the Bay’s 3,000-year-old lagoon. It is also one of South Africa’s most important harbour towns.
PORT ELIZABETH
Addo Elephant Park is a highlight here and is home to 300 Addo elephants, which are recognisable by their smaller stature and reddish colour. The park is also home to a variety of other animals, including lion, zebra, kudu and cheetah.
Walking tours in the city are a great way to explore the rich history and take in important landmarks such as St Mary’s Cathedral, Fort Frederick and Donkin Memorial.
DURBAN
The Tala Private Game Reserve offers a wonderful opportunity for big game and bird-watching. An open-air drive through the reserve will undoubtedly be the highlight of your visit here as you go in search of various wildlife.
